The book tells the story of the bright and remarkable fate of Lieutenant General Pavel Mikhailovich Fitin (1907-1971), head of Soviet foreign intelligence from 1939 to 1946. At that time, our intelligence officers managed to determine the date of Germany's attack on the USSR, the plans for major operations, and the direction of the main blows of the Wehrmacht, to seize the secrets of nuclear weapons, establish working contacts with Western intelligence agencies, facilitate meetings of the leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition countries, and prevent separate negotiations of our Anglo-American allies with representatives of Germany. Under Fitin, the glorious traditions were laid that continue today in the activities of the SVR of Russia.
The book, based on documentary materials - some of them published for the first time - reveals many secrets of the then highest leadership of the country, foreign policy, and intelligence agencies, as well as debunking some widely circulated legends and established misconceptions.
This is the first book that tells about the life and professional activities of the youngest leader of Soviet intelligence, who, through no fault of his own, found himself unjustly forgotten.
