In 1894, Maxim Gorky wrote the novella "Goremyka Pavel" and the stories "Old Woman Izergil", "Chelkash", "Once in Autumn", "My Companion". These works can be found in our collection. What was happening with Gorky that year? He was 26 years...
old. The young writer was supported by the writer Vladimir Korolenko. Gorky lived in Nizhny Novgorod, then moved to Samara, working and publishing in various newspapers: "Volgar", "Volga Herald" and "Samara Newspaper". Many of the works from that year were only able to be published later. The novella "Goremyka Pavel" became the author's first major work and is now less known to readers. It is about the wandering of a boy abandoned by his parents, about hard labor and poverty, about first love and crimes. Many researchers noted the similarity to the images of Dickens, while others called the novella "kitsch". In any case, the early works of Gorky have become recognized masterpieces of world literature.
