 "I am learning to see" - one of the first entries in the diary of Malte Laurids Brigge, a young Dane who came to Paris. The impoverished neighborhoods and boarding houses, the clatter of trams, exhaustion and despair - this... is what Malte sees. He intends to become a writer, to express what he has seen in his diary; it is necessary to preserve his integrity. However, the hero is unable to connect his life with the lives of others, turning himself inside out, dissecting, peering and listening, he condemns himself to eternal solitude.
