Anna Andreyevna Akhmatova 1889–1966 – the greatest poet of the 20th century, translator, and literary scholar. She is considered the most outstanding poetess of the Silver Age. Akhmatova considered poets I.F. Annensky and A.S. Pushkin as her teachers. Throughout her...
long life, Anna Akhmatova experienced two revolutions and two world wars, witnessed Stalinist repressions, and the death of her closest ones. One of Akhmatova's most significant works – Requiem 1934–1963 – was initially written as a lyrical cycle, but during the writing process, it was renamed as a poem. Poems from the cycle were only published during her lifetime through samizdat and abroad. In Russia, the full text of Requiem was first published only in 1987. In addition to the poem, this collection includes significant poems by the poetess from the collections Rosary 1914, The White Flock 1917, Plantago 1921, Anno Domini MCMXXI 1923, The Reed 1930, as well as poems that did not appear in separate books by the author. Due to the criticism, silence, persecution, and strict censorship that Anna Akhmatova faced since the 1930s, many of her creations were not published in her homeland even decades after the author's death. In 1965 and 1966, Akhmatova was nominated by A.A. for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
