The peak of Gustave Flaubert's creativity, the novel «Madame Bovary», which had a tremendous impact on world literature, was published in the Paris literary magazine «La Revue de Paris» from October 1 to December 15, 1856. The author and publishers... were accused of offending public morality and taken to court. The scandal surrounding the novel made it popular, and the acquittal on February 7, 1857, allowed it to be released as a separate book. In the novel, Flaubert described the sad story of Delphine Couturier but insisted that Emma had no prototype. «Emma is me,» the writer said, like his heroine, suffering from the boredom and vulgarity of provincial life, yet on Delphine's grave, in addition to her own name, there is the inscription «Madame Bovary».
