Biography: Yegor Gaidar

In the modern history of Russia, it is hard to find a figure who evokes as many conflicting assessments. Sociological surveys conducted in our days have shown the majority's attitude toward the "father of Russian reforms" — it is sharply... negative; the name Gaidar still causes rejection or even hostility for many. But is this fair? Are we not attributing to him actions he did not commit while forgetting, on the contrary, what he did for the country? After all, one way or another, we live in a world largely created by Gaidar in just a few months of his time in power, and much of what seems obvious and ordinary to us has become so precisely because of the reforms carried out under his leadership.
