The action of the novel takes place in 1896, on the eve of and during the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II. Mikhail, the four-year-old son of Grand Duke George Alexandrovich, is kidnapped. The kidnapper, who calls himself "Doctor Lind," demands... the diamond "Count Orlov" that adorns the imperial scepter as ransom. If the deal does not go through, the child will be returned to his parents in parts. But without the scepter, the coronation cannot take place. Erast Petrovich Fandorin takes it upon himself to save the honor of the monarchy.
Akunin somewhat distorted the family ties of the Romanovs. As in all his works, he changed the names of historical figures (the Moscow chief of police in the book is Colonel Lasovsky, based on the real Vlasovsky).
