The main goal of this book is to tell about the changes that have occurred in the former socialist countries. The author visited Germany (the former GDR), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (the former Czechoslovakia), Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania.
During... each of these trips, the author met with a variety of people: former state and government leaders, businesspeople, economists, artists and painters, teachers, and youth. Among the most famous interlocutors are the last General Secretary of the SED Central Committee Egon Krenz, the first Prime Minister of independent Slovakia Vladimír Mečiar, the last Tsar of Bulgaria Simeon II, former member of the Politburo of the PZPR Stanisław Ciosek, one of the founders of the trade union movement "Solidarity" Adam Michnik, renowned film director Krzysztof Zanussi, famous rock singer János Kóbor and many others.
This book is about the changes that radically altered Eastern Europe, how politics, economics, culture, and the lives of ordinary people have changed. It is a firsthand account of what it was like to live in an era of change. And whether the changes have ended, if people have received what they dreamed of 30 years ago, about hopes, joys, victories, disappointments, and the aftertaste of revolution.
