Afghanistan. The end of the war of Soviet troops against the Mujahideen. Special forces bring order to the province of Kunar, bordering Pakistan. During a chase for stingers, Kondratiy Lvovich Zarubin, a hereditary Cossack and soon-to-be captain of special forces, falls into a trap. After an explosion in a bunker filled with explosives, his spirit is transported to the past. Awakening, he discovers that he is now living in someone else's body. Here he is called Yevpatiy Kolovrat. He is a boyar and a military leader serving the Ryazan prince Yuri. The year is 1235 AD. There are still a few years until Batu’s invasion, during which Russia will tremble, and Ryazan will be the first to be burned. The army of Khan Batu is already camped on the Voronezh. A turmoil is brewing along the borders of the principality, while confusion grows in Ryazan itself. No one knows when the invasion will begin, but the looming threat over Ryazan does not scare the other princes of Russia, who are habitually occupied with their own conflicts. Everyone is waiting. And only a voivode from the twentieth century, who has already taken many secret steps to strengthen the city, is convinced – without support, Ryazan is doomed nonetheless. By chance, an ancient secret falls into Kolovrat's hands, capable of changing the course of history. A doomed city gains hope.
