«What a delight these tales are! Each one is a poem!» — wrote A. S. Pushkin. The poet was captivated by the people's creative imagination, fantasy, artistic figurative thinking, and the essence of language. Pushkin did not just translate Russian... tales into verse, but as a folk storyteller, he altered the plot, used elements from other genres, such as songs, laments, spells, and even details of foreign folklore. In the «Tales,» Pushkin experimented with form but always aimed for one goal — to show the beauty of the Russian language and, through it, the Russian soul. This goal is aided by the illustrations of Vyacheslav Nazaruk in the fairy-tale «Russian style.» By addressing not only folklore but also the traditions of domestic illustration, the artist created multilayered, complex drawings in color and ornamentation.
