The Gold-Bug

The book is an adaptation of the adventure story by the famous American writer, a classic of ‘horror’ and detective fiction Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) ‘The Gold-Bug’. It is an exciting tale of pirate treasures, the key to the location of which was encrypted. The main character of the story, William Legrand, managed to decipher it using the laws of cryptography— the science of methods for encrypting information. He was assisted by two finds—a large gold-colored beetle resembling a scarab and an old piece of parchment with seemingly incomprehensible numbers and symbols.
This guide will help students of general secondary schools prepare for the final certification in English in the format of theUnified State Exam in the ‘Reading’ section. The text of the guide has been adapted for educational purposes to the Intermediate level. Each chapter is accompanied by a commentary, a translation of difficult words and expressions, and exercises in the format of the USE ‘Reading’ section, presented with all three types of exam tasks. Completing the exercises will give students the opportunity to gain experience and form skills of complete and partial understanding of texts, which will allow them to easily handle similar tasks in the actual exam. At the end of the guide, there are answers to the assignments and an English-Russian dictionary.
