They hide, face starvation, cross borders secretly, many of their relatives and loved ones are in concentration camps. Having lost their homeland and accustomed way of life, facing mortal danger, Remarque's heroes still find the strength for compassion and love.
The novel was first published only in 1941, immediately after its film adaptation.
