Jewish Folk Tales

This book is a unique anthology of the folklore of Eastern European Jews and, moreover, the first and so far the only collection of Jewish folklore in the Russian language.
The basis for it was the collection of Efim Raize, who dedicated over half a century to the study of written sources, and most importantly, the recording of oral traditions and legends that still existed among those for whom Yiddish was their native language.
Efim Samoilovich Raize (1904-1970) collected Jewish tales throughout his life: the first recordings date back to 1916, and the last to the end of the 1960s. Among his informants were very different people: children and adults, residents of small towns and capitals, famous poets, housewives and engineers, professors, cobblers, teachers, a rabbi, a specialist in scientific atheism, and even a professional thief.
Raize's collection was systematized and prepared for publication by the specialist in Eastern European Jewish folklore Valery Dymsits.
