Spider Jerusalem is the Hunter Thompson of the coming days, a gonzo journalist of the age of triumphant cyberpunk. Having made a name for himself with political reporting and a fortune with the book about the election campaign "Shot in the Face", Spider buys a house on a distant mountain and leaves the City when a candidate from the "law and order party" becomes president, whom, at Spider's light touch, everyone calls the Monster. Cut off from the neighbors by minefields and smart cannons, Spider enjoys solitude for five blissful years—until he is reached by a call from the editor. Spider owes the publishing house two new books—and has long spent the advance. There's nothing to be done: he has to return to the City, as Spider is unable to create anywhere else; to the City that "has never allowed itself to rot or decay. It grows inexorably in all directions… It is fueled by thousands of different cultures—and thousands of new ones that are born every day." To the City where ads are broadcast directly into the brain, thawed aliens from the 20th century try to cope with the shock of encountering the future, aliens from the Vilnius colony trade their genes, and authorities and police do as they please.
