Daughter of the Samurai

Etsuko grew up in the family of a high-ranking samurai, where life is governed by traditions and duty is more important than feelings. But the onset of the 20th century destroys the familiar world. Her fate is decided for her — the young girl is married off and sent to America, where she faces a foreign language, a foreign culture, and complete loneliness.
Arriving in Ohio, Etsuko begins a long journey of growing up: between Japanese loyalty to duty and American freedom of choice, between the past and the future, between the fear and hope of becoming happy.
