Thales, Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Theophrastus, Archimedes, Euclid... Most of these names are well known to anyone familiar with the history of science. Each of these renowned names is separated from us by many centuries, and therefore the reader will be interested to learn something new about the work of the great representatives of science in the Ancient World, the circumstances of their lives, upbringing, and critical evaluation of various works that contributed to the accumulation and development of human knowledge. This goal is served by the proposed book by the French writer and naturalist of the 19th century, Louis Figuier. Published in France in 1866, it was immediately translated into English, German, and Russian. Even today, Figuier's book enjoys well-deserved respect not only in the academic world but also among a wide reading audience.
