Bourgeois. Studies on the History of the Spiritual Development of the Modern Economic Man. Jews and Economic Life

What gives rise to the spirit of entrepreneurship, which is the driving force of modern capitalism? Are different nations endowed with it to the same extent? How does religion influence the economy? Answers to these questions, which have become relevant again for Russia in the early 21st century, are provided in his book «Bourgeois» by the famous German sociologist Werner Sombart. The book is printed based on the Russian edition of 1924. In the monograph «Bourgeois», the author concludes about the outstanding role of Jews in the development of modern capitalism, international trade, and colonial economy, recognizing them as the founders of banks and exchanges and such speculative-financial instruments for managing the economy as promissory notes, stocks, banknotes, and bonds. W. Sombart dedicated a special work «Jews and Economic Life» to the detailed analysis of the role of Jews in the development of capitalist economy; it was first published in Russian translation in 1912.
