Moods

«Moods» — a novel by American writer Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1864. The story of Sylvia Yule — a young woman trying to cope with the ups and downs of adult life and find her place in the world. Throughout the book, Sylvia experiences a whole range of emotions and moods, including love, jealousy, sadness, and happiness, hence the title of the book «Moods».

Sylvia Yule, a young girl from a well-to-do family, lives a measured life with her sister Prue and brother Mark. Her existence changes when she meets two men: poet Jeffrey Moore, sensitive and devoted, and Adam Warwick — a passionate, mysterious man with a dark past. Sylvia initially sees Moore as a friend, not noticing his love, while Warwick awakens deep, vague feelings in her. Mark and his friends organize a river trip during which Sylvia grows closer to both men, but especially to Warwick, whose strength and independence captivate her.
Moore confesses his love to Sylvia, but she rejects him, believing she only feels a friendly attachment. Later, she learns that Warwick is engaged to another woman, Ottilie, which stirs jealousy and pain within her. Sylvia decides to accept Moore's proposal and marries him, hoping to find peace in his tender love. However, after the wedding, Warwick returns to her life, and passion ignites between them. Sylvia realizes that her feelings for Warwick are stronger than for her husband, and she finds herself faced with a painful choice between duty and desire.



Louisa May Alcott (1832—1888) — an American writer who lived an extraordinary life: she worked as a nurse during the Civil War, fought against slavery, and was one of the first participants in the movement for women's suffrage.
Due to her family's dire situation, Louisa had to find ways to earn a living from an early age. She worked as a seamstress, governess, maid, and companion. In her free time, she wrote stories and fairy tales for children of Emerson, some of which were included in the 1854 collection «Fables of Flowers».
