True Scary Russian Fairy Tales. Eternal Stories

A collection of frightening folk tales for adults. Carefully gathered by A. N. Afanasyev, the folklore of ancient Russia as it sounded in dark peasant huts, by the light of a fire, while a blizzard howled outside.

The vampire rises from the grave and destroys a girl's family, powerless against the evil spirit. The dead princess scratches in wild rage at the protective circle. Baba Yaga not only steams in the bathhouse but also eats late travelers. In these tales, there is no certainty of a happy ending, just as there is no certainty that the surviving hero can be called a living person.

The famous folklorist Alexander Afanasyev, inspired by the example of the Brothers Grimm, collected tales from all corners of Russia. Some he heard himself in the villages, some were sent to him by enthusiasts like Vladimir Dal, but most he found in archives.

The stories in this collection feature terrible and dangerous forces that cannot be defeated by mere courage or cunning. They come from the dark forest, from a forgotten grave, from the very human soul, and remind us of a world where evil is not obligated to be punished, and miracles are not necessarily good.
