Ernie Marino is twenty years old, and he is a potential, a person who burns out, losing the sense of life. Others avoid potentials, as they can burn everything around. Ernie studies at the university and hides his peculiarity from his friends. With each passing day, he finds himself closer to burning out: first, he experiences choking fits, then his hands begin to smolder, and eventually, he completely burns out. One day, Ernie sees another potential during a lecture — and from that moment on, his life is turned upside down.
