The Gathas of Zoroaster are one of the oldest religious texts on the planet and the oldest part of the Avesta, the sacred book of Zoroastrianism. The worldview and ethics of the Gathas laid the foundation for the high culture of the ancient Persians, builders of the Achaemenid and Parthian empires, and for centuries, Zoroastrianism was one of the world religions. Modern European culture is almost unaware of this faith, as it has been largely displaced from the information field by Abrahamic religions. Yet, it was the people of Zoroaster, the nomadic Aryan tribes of the ancient steppes, who became the ancestors of most modern European nations—therefore, the principles and legends of archaic Zoroastrianism may be valuable to us as a key to our common past and our shared spiritual history. The proposed edition is a new translation of the Gathas, for which the translator consulted modern Zoroastrian priests.
