After Anne Frank's Diary. The Fates of the Inhabitants of the Shelter

"The Diary of Anne Frank" — the writings of a Jewish girl, a world-famous document of memory about the Holocaust. Anne started her diary in June 1942, on the day of her thirteenth birthday, hiding with her family in a secret room on Prinsengracht in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. She called it "The Shelter."

The diary ends on August 1, 1944. All the inhabitants of the Shelter were arrested and deported. In January 1945, Soviet troops liberated the German concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, where among the prisoners was Anne's father, Otto Frank. When he began searching for his wife, daughters, and four other people who had spent two years together with the Franks in the Shelter, Otto soon realized that he was the only one who survived.

The book by Dutch writer and historian Bas von Benda-Beckmann is a new attempt based on meticulous archival research to restore the fates of those who shared a secret dwelling with Anne Frank and did not survive the Holocaust.
