Oblomov

The Russian writer, who tries to eradicate his vice, usually falls in love with it — reconciles and even finds undeniable merits. Dostoevsky exposes Raskolnikov but is almost captivated by his theory. Goncharov struggles almost autobiographically with neurosis — laziness, inactivity, fear of life — and elevates it to an absolute. Before us is a parable; in reality, Oblomovism leads to moral degradation, personality disintegration, physical and moral uncleanliness, — in Goncharov's novel, laziness precisely protects the hero from all these things.
