Detective Stories of the Meiji Era

The action of the detective stories by Sakaguchi Ango takes place in the Meiji era – a time when Japan was going through a period of painful but necessary transformation, and millennia-old traditions gave way to modern trends. One such... trend was the noble gentleman Yuuki Shinjurou. A descendant of a family of hereditary samurai, who received an excellent education in the West, Yuuki returned to his homeland with a steadfast desire to fight for justice. Not chasing fame or wealth and not wishing to become a government official, Shinjurou becomes an amateur detective whom the police turn to whenever an investigation reaches a dead end.


Originally published as separate stories in the pages of periodicals, "Detective Stories of the Meiji Era" won the public's popularity and has since formed the basis for two TV series, manga, and anime. This edition includes the first ten out of twenty stories from the collection. All stories are published in Russian for the first time.
