Many years later, Colburn returns to Red Bluff — a small town in the backwoods of the American South, where his childhood unfolded. What draws this thirty-year-old man back to these places? The terrible events that once took place here... have left a mark on his entire life — the boy was not yet twelve when he witnessed his father take his own life. Only later did Colburn learn about the tragedy that unfolded in their family even before his birth.
Now Red Bluff is dying — the valley in which the town lies is being encroached upon by the forest, and the people here seem to not live, but merely to portray life. Only the recent mysterious disappearances are capable of stirring the thick swamp of apathy. Something is amiss in this town, and Colburn will soon learn exactly what it is.
