Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) — Indian thinker, social activist and philosopher, disciple of Ramakrishna. His birth name was Narendranath Datta. He received a European education in philosophy and religion. The death of his father, followed by poverty and social isolation, prompted... the young man to decide to become a monk. Traveling around India, he experienced the hardships of ordinary people firsthand and chose as his life's goal the social rejuvenation of his country. At this time, Narend took on the spiritual name under which he entered history, — Swami Vivekananda. To draw attention to the plight of millions of Indians, Vivekananda spoke at the World Parliament of Religions in the USA. His lectures on Vedanta and yoga received resounding success. Vivekananda returned to India a triumphant figure, declaring to the world the necessity of combating the outdated caste system and religious conflicts. The philosopher advocated for compulsory universal education and national unity among Hindus. In his short life, Swami Vivekananda accomplished so much for his homeland and all of humanity that his name is still remembered with warmth and gratitude today. The philosophy of Vedanta and yoga is presented in this collection using simple examples that resonate with Western readers. The book includes lectures on Karma-, Bhakti-, Jnana-, and Raja-yoga, addressing topics such as work and labor, love for God, reality and illusion, as well as the mind and its liberation. Here you will also find the essay «Practical Vedanta», which interprets the Upanishads and reveals their meaning for modern man. Also of significant interest are the «Inspired Talks» — recordings of Swami Vivekananda's speeches, where he shares his wisdom in the form of aphorisms, parables, and philosophical statements.
