Goodbye, Weapons!

«Goodbye, Weapons!» is invariably named among the greatest American novels. Published in 1929, it became the second novel by Ernest Hemingway, a future Nobel laureate, and secured his reputation as one of the most significant writers of his generation. The love story unfolding against the backdrop of World War I is largely autobiographical: like the author himself, the protagonist of the novel volunteers to go to the Italian front, serves in the transport department of the Red Cross, and meets a beautiful nurse. Hemingway recalled that he felt happier than ever while creating this incredibly touching novel about lovers trying to find refuge in a world gone mad from war. «The fact that the book turned out to be tragic did not upset me, as I knew that life is a tragedy and its ending is predetermined. But the realization that I was able to compose, and so truthfully that I enjoyed reading it myself, starting from this daily work, brought me unparalleled pleasure. And nothing else matters.»
