Under the Influence

«Under the Influence» — an author's translation by Viktor Kogan of the American collection «On Booze», published in 2011. The New York publishing house New Directions, responsible for the posthumous fame of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940), gathered magazine publications and... the writer's works from its archives under one cover. The book includes diary entries, essays, and short stories by one of the brightest representatives of the «lost generation», united by the theme of alcohol and arranged in reverse chronological order — from the late 1930s to the early 1920s. Fragmentary, joyless, yet piercingly poetic texts gradually immerse us in memories of the fading «jazz age», the tumultuous interwar period, and nostalgia for the old New York, as if seen through the haze from the deck of the last ferry to Staten Island.
