Kris is forced to hide. All the girls born in the same year as her are taken to the palace, from which they never return. Therefore, she cuts her hair short, dresses like a boy, and scraps by with odd... jobs at the docks.
 
Kris only has memories of her nanny and the tales about the ayn — spirits living under the veil of silence and possessing the power of sound. Everything they say magically comes true, making them invincible.
But what can tales mean when the world around is collapsing? The state is becoming poorer, the laws are increasingly brutal, and people are disappearing without a trace. Yet sometimes, tales turn out to be real.
