«Picnic and Other Nightmares» — is a continuation of the novels «My Family and Other Animals» — «a book that captivates in the literal sense of the word» (Sunday Times) and «the most delightful idyll one could imagine» (The New Yorker), — «Birds, Beasts and Relatives» and «The Garden of the Gods», as well as the collection of stories «Holidays, Beasts and Other Nonsense». With unchanging love and inimitable humor, Durrell recounts the stay of his family (including his elder brother Larry, namely Lawrence Durrell — the future author of the famous «Alexandria Quartet») on the Greek island of Corfu and their further adventures, demonstrating the widest range of writing skill up to a gothic ghost story. These novels and collections have spread across the world in multi-million copies, becoming staple books for several generations of readers, and in England, they have even entered the school curriculum. «The Corfu Trilogy» (which over time grew to six books) has been adapted for television three times, the last being between 2016 and 2019, when the British company ITV released the series «The Durrells», one of the directors of which was Edward Hall («Downton Abbey», «Miss Marple by Agatha Christie»).

The collection is published in a new translation by Sergey Task, whose translations of Tom Wolfe, John le Carré, Stephen King, Paul Auster, Ian McEwan, Richard Yates and F. Scott Fitzgerald have already become classics.
