Snail on the Slope of Fuji: Japanese Haikus

The collection "Snail on the Slope of Fuji" includes Japanese haikus, or hokku, from the Late Middle Ages translated by V. N. Markova. Among them are talented students of the famous Basho, such as Boncho, Kyōrai, Jōsō, Ransetsu, Shiko, Issa, and others. Each of them has a unique style, sometimes quite different from the style of the renowned teacher. These exquisite and concise poems, like ink sketches, sometimes sharp like epigrams, sometimes reminiscent of proverbs, require contemplation and rich imagination from the reader.
