Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827) is a famous German storyteller, born into a family of a Prussian Foreign Office employee and a noblewoman from Alsace. The boy was only 7 years old when his father passed away, and the family moved to...
his grandfather's estate in the city of Tübingen. The huge library became the little Wilhelm's favorite place, and the books his best friends. After graduating from university, Hauff became a tutor in the family of the Minister of Defense - General Baron von Högel. It was for his small pupils that Wilhelm began to write fairy tales. The magical tales of W. Hauff were first published in the "Almanac of Tales for January 1826 for the Sons and Daughters of the Nobility" and immediately found many fans. During Hauff's lifetime, two collections of his fairy tales were published; another collection was published by his wife three years after his death.
This book includes two popular fairy tales by Hauff - "Dwarf Nose" and "The Tale of the Caliph Stork." They not only astonish the young reader with unprecedented and sometimes dangerous wonders but also provide lessons of wisdom and mercy, strengthening the belief in the justice of the world and the inevitable victory of good over evil.
The boy Jacob, the hero of the fairy tale "Dwarf Nose," is punished for his audacity and disrespect towards an old woman - and thus he faces extraordinary transformations and a long separation from his parents. The hero must endure mockery and humiliation; however, in Jacob's heart, responsiveness and compassion for those around him awaken - and these qualities ultimately help him break the evil spell and find happiness.
