She merely adjusted the collar of her coat, as if trying to protect herself further from the piercing autumn wind and the hostility of the outside world in this gloomy city. For the umpteenth time this week, she heard and saw evidence of the wave of violent crimes that had come to Arkham.
The city is increasingly shrouded in a sticky darkness. It seems that the instruments in her laboratory, which catch paranormal external influences, are not mistaken this time...
In the "In the Dark of Night" expansion for the third edition of "Arkham Horror," investigators will have to confront the sides of the city that should not be shown in daylight. Organized crime is inexorably on the rise, secret cults are working in the name of a dark lord, an unnatural moon hangs over the houses, and unidentified horrors lurk in the night. This expansion includes two completely new scenarios, new contacts for each area of Arkham, new monsters and anomalies, as well as four new investigators ready to face the impending horrors with new spells, items, and allies.
About the Game
"Arkham Horror. Third Edition" – is a new edition of the world-famous cooperative adventure game based on Lovecraft's crazed myths. The game is released a damn dozen years after the previous part, which is highly symbolic… Danger once again looms over Arkham (and indeed the whole world). Horrific creatures, usually dwelling outside of our time and space, are creeping into our world. So you are once again in for mystical events, encounters with the supernatural, battles with monsters, journeys through other worlds, conflicts with the Ancient Ones, and other damn nonsense!
The game itself has transformed significantly and represents an improved and revised version with new mechanics. The first thing that catches the eye is the modular compound board, which makes the game more compact, variable, and convenient to use. The board consists of area and street tiles that connect various locations.
Now the game offers four scenarios, each with its own Ancient One and its own game board. You will be able to challenge Cthulhu, Azathoth, Hastur, and Shub-Niggurath, whose power in the material world will increase as the game progresses and due to detectives' failures. To win, you still need to gather clues, close gates, and defeat monsters, but now each scenario offers its own victory conditions, initially unknown to the players. The scenarios are arranged in such a way that each adventure will differ from the previous one.
Each detective you will play is unique, has their own story, motive, and set of characteristics, both primary (stamina and sanity) and secondary (observation, strength, will, etc.). By the way, unlike the previous version, here you can choose your own starting equipment.
How to Play?
The game proceeds in rounds, which are divided into phases. Players decide for themselves who takes turns and in what order.
Action Phase – each player can perform two different actions. This can be movement, gaining resources, attacking a monster, evading it, trading with other players, investigating a location, and other actions.
Monster Phase – monsters activate, attack players, or prepare for their next moves.
Contact Phase – investigators draw contact cards, which represent various events that happen to them.
Mythos Phase – investigators draw two tokens, which have a strong influence on the game. New monsters, clues, tokens, etc. may appear in the game.
All tests, as usual, are resolved by rolling dice. Thus, turn by turn, players get into scrapes and try to get out of them while investigating the scenario.
Who Won?
"Arkham Horror" is a fully cooperative game, so all players win and lose together. To win, you must fulfill a number of conditions that depend on the scenario, but initially, they are not obvious – players will have to conduct their own investigation and come to a conclusion, or perish ignominiously in the whirlpool of wild horror.
