Board game - Arkham Horror: In the Dark of Night (expansion)

Attention! This is an expansion. You will need the base version of "Arkham Horror" to play.

Kate Winthrop was slowly walking across the bridge over the Miskatonic River. Reaching the middle and stopping for a moment, she saw a black car speeding by, closely followed by a police van with a wailing siren. She merely adjusted her coat collar, as if trying to protect herself further from the piercing autumn wind and the hostility of the outside world in this grim city. It was not the first time this week that she was hearing and seeing confirmations of the wave of violent crimes that had struck Arkham.

The city is increasingly wrapped in a sticky darkness. It seems that the devices in her laboratory, which detect paranormal external influences, are not mistaken this time...

In the "In the Dark of Night" expansion for the third edition of "Arkham Horror", investigators will face those parts of the city that should not be seen in daylight. Organized crime is relentlessly growing, secret cults are working in the name of the dark lord, an unnatural moon hangs over the houses, and unidentified horrors lurk in the night. This expansion includes two completely new scenarios, new contacts for each area of Arkham, new monsters and anomalies, as well as four new investigators ready to confront the upcoming horrors with new spells, items, and allies.

About the game

"Arkham Horror. Third Edition" is a new edition of the world-famous cooperative adventure based on Lovecraftian myths. The game is released a damn dozen years after the previous installment, which is very symbolic... Danger is once again looming over Arkham (and the whole world). Terrifying creatures, usually dwelling outside our time and space, are creeping into our world. So you can expect mystical events, encounters with the supernatural, battles with monsters, journeys through other worlds, confrontations with the Ancient Ones, and other damn things!

The game itself has undergone significant transformation and presents an improved and revised version with new mechanics. The first thing that catches the eye is the modular board, which makes the game more compact, variable, and convenient to use. The board consists of district and street tiles that connect various locations.

Now the game offers four scenarios, each with its own Ancient One and its own game board. You will be able to challenge Cthulhu, Azathoth, Hastur, and Shub-Niggurath, whose power in the material world will increase throughout the game and due to detectives' failures. To win, you still need to gather clues, close gates, and destroy monsters, but now each scenario offers its own victory conditions, which are initially unknown to players. The scenarios are designed in such a way that each adventure will differ from the previous one.

Each detective you will play is unique, with their own story, motive, and set of characteristics, both primary (stamina and sanity) and secondary (observation, strength, will, etc.). By the way, unlike the previous version, here you can choose your own suitable starting equipment.

How to play?
The game takes place in rounds, and rounds are divided into phases. Players decide who goes and in what order.

Action phase - each player can perform two different actions. This can be movement, gaining resources, attacking a monster and evading it, trading with other players, exploring a location, and other actions.
Monster phase - monsters activate, attack players or prepare for the next turns.
Contact phase - investigators draw contact cards, which are various events that happen to them.
Myth phase - investigators draw two tokens, which have a strong impact on the game. New monsters, clues, tokens, etc. may appear in the game.
All checks are resolved by rolling dice, as usual. Thus, turn by turn, players find themselves in predicaments and try to escape from them while investigating the scenario.

Who won?
"Arkham Horror" is a fully cooperative game, so all players win or lose together. To win, you will need to meet a number of conditions that depend on the scenario, but initially, they are not obvious - players will have to conduct their own investigation and reach the conclusion, or perish ignominiously in the depths of wild terror.
