The work of Chrétien de Troyes — a famous chivalric romance of the 12th century, which tells of the adventures of the knights Perceval and Gawain. It is here that the plot — or myth? — of the search for the Grail first appears, having a powerful influence on the entire Western culture of the following centuries.
But what is this Grail? Who is its mysterious keeper, the infirm Fisher King? And what is this "bleeding lance" that the hero encounters? The book is imbued with an atmosphere of mystery, ambiguity, but it also includes not only enigmas but also rogue humor, courtly love, fierce knightly battles, and that wondrous "suddenly" which prevents the heroes from straying from the path of adventures…
To navigate the intricacies of medieval culture, the reader will find help in the introductory article by N.V. Zababurova (1944–2014) — co-author of the translation, Doctor of Philological Sciences and professor. For this edition, the complete poetic translation has been verified and refined by her co-author, A.N. Triandafilidis.
