Chicago, 1944. Twenty-year-old Aki and her parents have just been released from the Manzanar camp, where they were held after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, along with thousands of other Americans of Japanese descent. The Iko family had to leave... California, which had become their home, and travel to Chicago, where Aki's older sister, Rosa, had moved just a few months prior. But just before their arrival, Rosa tragically dies under the wheels of a subway train. The authorities believe it was suicide, but Aki does not believe that her strong and always optimistic sister would take her own life. Her intuition tells her that there are many secrets in this story, and Aki realizes that it is up to her to uncover the truth.
