The meeting place was a secluded hotel on the remote Icelandic peninsula of Snæfellsnes. While a storm raged outside, the house was filled with merriment and clinking glasses. Everyone played their assigned roles. But in the heat of the celebration, the masks of propriety fell away, and envy, mutual grievances, and pent-up resentments burst forth.
