"What a delight these Tales are! Each one is a poem!" - wrote A. S. Pushkin. The poet was captivated by the folk creative imagination, fantasy, artistic figurative thinking, and the essence of language. Pushkin did not merely translate Russian... tales into verse; as a folk storyteller, he altered the plot, used elements from other genres such as songs, laments, spells, and even details from foreign folklore. In his "Tales," Pushkin experimented with form, but always aimed for one goal - to showcase the beauty of the Russian language and, through it, the Russian soul.
This goal is aided by the illustrations of Vyacheslav Nazaruk in a fairy-tale "Russian style" - multilayered, complex in color and ornamentation. By referencing not only folklore but also the traditions of domestic illustration, the artist created drawings for seven of Pushkin's works: the poet's most famous tales, the ballad-tale "The Suitor," and the unfinished work "The Tale of the Bear Woman."
