The Cold Heart

Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827) was a famous German storyteller, born into the family of a foreign ministry employee of Prussia and a noblewoman from Alsace. The boy was only 7 years old when his father passed away, and the family moved to his grandfather's estate in the city of Tübingen. The huge library became the favorite place of little Wilhelm, and the books were his best friends. After graduating from university, Hauff began working as a governess for the family of the Minister of Defense - General Baron von Högel. It was for his little pupils that Wilhelm began to write fairy tales. The magical tales of W. Hauff were first published in "The January 1826 Almanac of Fairy Tales for the Sons and Daughters of the Noble Estates" and immediately found many fans. During Hauff's lifetime, two collections of his fairy tales were published; another collection was published by his wife three years after his death.

The hero of the tale is a young man named Peter, who is dissatisfied with his job and dreams of wealth and popularity. He desperately envies his successful fellow countrymen and also wants to live happily: carefreely dancing in the tavern, throwing money left and right, playing gambling games... But how can a simple charcoal burner achieve this? In order to change his situation in life, the young man decides to seek the help of magical forces and ventures into the gloomy spruce groves.
