The Life of a Ship.

This is a book about a captain and his ship named "Clementine". The sailor tells the story of his vessel from the early 1930s, when it was built at the shipyard, until its demise. Boarding "Clementine" as a boy, he... spent almost his entire life on this cargo ship, rising from a cabin boy to captain. With "Clementine", he was able to see the whole world: Havana and Valencia, Panama and New York, Lisbon and Liverpool. "Clementine" traveled with peaceful cargoes to the most exotic countries, during the war she transported ammunition and equipment for the Red Army through Arctic waters, and at the end of her long working life found peace on the ocean floor. The captain was at the helm of his "Clementine" until its very end. Together they embark on a journey of a lifetime.
The ship and its story come to life in the amazing, detailed illustrations by Roberto Innocenti, which show how the world changed from the 1930s to the 1980s. Together with the sailors, we become witnesses to the succession of historical events: the Spanish Civil War, World War II, the strikes of the 1980s in Poland, and we admire the diversity of landscapes from various corners of the world: Polynesia and India, America and Europe, volcanic eruptions, Arctic ice, scenes of peaceful life, and naval battles.
The story of the ship's life is complemented by a map of the peaceful and military routes of "Clementine", as well as diagrams of the ship's interior from bow to stern and from masts to hold. "Clementine" itself is a fictional vessel, but its fate mirrors the stories of many cargo ships of that time.
Roberto Innocenti is an artist renowned worldwide for the books "The Old House", "The Adventures of Pinocchio", "The White Rose", and others. In 2008, he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contribution to the development of children's literature.
