History of Russia for Children

The work of the remarkable children's writer, historian, and educator A. O. Ishimova (1805–1881) remains the best book on Russian history created for children for two centuries.

Pushkin was captivated by Ishimova's "History of Russia" (Here is how one ought to write!..), and his last letter, sent before the duel, was addressed to none other than Alexandra Osipovna. Enthusiastic reviews of this book were dedicated by Belinsky and Gogol.

The first edition of "History of Russia in Stories for Children" was published between 1837 and 1840 in 6 parts — this version is the most frequently reissued today. However, our edition is based on a later authorial revision published in 1866 — this is the very last version of the legendary book.

The book is decorated with full-color illustrations from the classics of Russian and European painting, and it is also equipped with new comments necessary for contemporary children and teenagers to understand the text from the previous century.

The work written for young readers by Ishimova is interesting to adults as well, thanks to vivid descriptions of various episodes from the thousand-year history of our country.
