"Arkham Horror: Third Edition" is a new edition of the world-renowned cooperative adventure based on Lovecraft's mad myths. The game comes out a hell of a dozen years after the release of the previous part, which is very symbolic… A...
threat hangs over Arkham (and the world) once again. Horrible creatures, usually dwelling outside our time and space, are creeping into our world. So, you can expect mystical events, encounters with the supernatural, battles with monsters, journeys to other worlds, confrontations with the Ancient Ones, and other hellish things!
The game itself has undergone significant transformation and represents an improved and reworked version of the game with new mechanics. The first thing that catches the eye is the modular board, which makes the game more compact, variable, and user-friendly. The board consists of district and street tiles that connect various locations.
Now the game offers four scenarios, each with its own Ancient One and game board. You can challenge Cthulhu, Azathoth, Hastur, and Shub-Niggurath, whose power in the material world will increase as the game progresses and due to the detectives’ failures. To win, you still need to collect clues, close gates, and destroy monsters, but now each scenario offers its own victory conditions, which are initially unknown to the players. The scenarios are arranged in such a way that each adventure will differ from the previous one.
Every detective you get to play is unique, possessing their own story, motive, and set of characteristics, both primary (stamina and intellect) and secondary (observation, strength, will, etc.). By the way, unlike the previous version, here you can choose the suitable starting equipment yourself.
The game proceeds in rounds, and the rounds are divided into phases. Players decide for themselves who will take turns and in what order.
The action phase – each player can perform two different actions. This can be movement, resource acquisition, monster attack and evasion, trading with other players, investigating locations, and other actions.
The monster phase – monsters become active, attack players or prepare for their next moves.
The encounter phase – investigators draw encounter cards, which are various events that happen to them.
The myth phase – investigators draw two tokens, which have a strong impact on the game. New monsters, clues, tokens, etc., may appear in the game.
All checks, as usual, are resolved with dice rolls. Thus, turn by turn, players find themselves in troubles and try to get out of them while investigating the scenario.
"Arkham Horror" is a fully cooperative game, so all players win and lose together. To win, you must fulfill a series of conditions that depend on the scenario, but are not initially obvious – players will have to conduct their own investigation and come to the finale or perish ignominiously in the depths of wild horror.
