The fate and personality of Andrei Platonov (1899–1951), the most brilliant and unusual Russian writer of the twentieth century, a classic of world literature, is as much a mystery as his works. Collected in one volume, Platonov’s letters are an... invaluable primary source for understanding the life and work of the author of “Chevengur” and “The Pit,” an organic part of the legacy of the writer, whose free artistic gift could not be stopped either by decades of prohibition or by the tragic circumstances of his personal biography. Before us is the “secret of secrets” and at the same time a unique document of the era. Commentaries on this were prepared by the Platonov Group of the Institute of World Literature. A. M. Gorky RAS with the involvement of huge material from periodicals of the 1920–1940s and the largest archives in Russia. The book is illustrated with unique photographs and supplemented with new materials.
