Viktor Petrovich Astafyev (1924—2001) was an outstanding Russian writer, laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR and RSFSR. In 1942, he volunteered for the front; in 1943, after graduating from infantry school, he was sent to the front lines and remained a private soldier until the end of the war. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star and the Medal for Courage on the front. His war experiences, the war as Viktor Astafyev saw it on the front lines, became the central theme of the writer's work. The novel "Cursed and Killed" is filled with incredible energy, the energy of resistance to timeless death. This novel summarizes Astafyev's reflections on war as a "crime against reason." The events of the first book (Volume 1) "Devil's Pit" unfold in the autumn of 1942.
