The Death of Arthur

According to Christopher Tolkien, the writer's son, John Tolkien always had a weakness for "northern" verse and repeatedly used accentual verse, stylizing some of his works after ancient Germanic poetry. Thus were born "The Lay of the Children of Húrin,"... "The New Lay of the Volsungs," "The New Lay of Gudrun," and other works of a similar nature. Based on the world-famous legend of Lancelot and Guinevere, the poem "The Death of Arthur," which began in 1934, remained unfinished due to the development of the world of "The Lord of the Rings." This book presents both the poem itself and an analysis of sketches by John Tolkien that reveal the author's intention, as well as an article on the connection of this text with "The Silmarillion."
