In the board strategic game "Ancient Knowledge", you will create artifacts and build monuments to immortalize your knowledge for future generations. But nothing lasts forever, including your creations. To preserve as much knowledge as possible, you need to effectively combine...
your cards and make tough decisions. Try to prove to your opponents that you are the worthy keeper of ancient knowledge!
How to play?
Players receive a builder's tablet. Together with the empty spaces around it, they form a playing area consisting of 5 zones: above the tablet is the chronology zone, where monument cards are played; the zone to the left of the tablet – is the past, where monument cards go after some time passes. The 5 cells on the tablet itself are the artifact zone. To the right of the tablet, players store technology cards, and at the bottom left of the tablet is the fifth zone – the lost knowledge zone: all tokens received during the game are placed there.
There are 2 types of cards in the game: buildings and technologies. At the beginning of the game, each player receives 10 cards and decides which 6 to keep. The remaining 4 go to the discard pile. Now you are ready to build a great legacy!
A player's turn is divided into 3 phases: actions, chronology, and decline. During the action phase, you can perform 2 out of 5 available actions:
- Creation: build a monument by choosing a card from your hand. It is placed in the chronology zone according to its number. Knowledge tokens are also placed on this card – their number is also indicated on the card
- Study: choose any open technology card on the table and place it to the right of the building tablet if you have completed its conditions. Technology cards have instant effects and also bring victory points at the end of the game
- Excavation: over time your monuments will fade away. That is, cards from the chronology zone will go to the past zone. The "excavation" action allows you to use them for your benefit: turn a card in the past 90 degrees and take 2 new building cards into your hand
- Transfer of knowledge: discard any number of cards from your hand, and for each one, remove one knowledge token from your monuments
- Search: take one building card into your hand
After performing the actions, the chronology phase begins: the effects of monument cards in the player's chronology zone take effect. After that, the decline phase occurs: cards in the chronology shift left by one cell. The card from cell one goes to the past, and if it had knowledge tokens, they go to the lost knowledge zone. You were unable to preserve them for future generations, and thus they will take away victory points from you at the end of the game. Then the turn passes to the next player.
Who won?
The number of rounds in the game is not limited, but the game ends when one player's past zone has 14 monument cards. The round is played to the end, and players move on to counting victory points: all monument cards in your past and technology cards provide their amount of victory points, while the monument cards remaining in the chronology provide only 1 victory point. Also, don’t forget to subtract points for each of your tokens in the lost knowledge zone. The player who has scored the most victory points becomes the worthy keeper of knowledge and wins the game!
