The main character is twelve-year-old Milo Pine, the foster son of the innkeepers in Nagspeak, a city of smugglers. The establishment named "The House of Green Glass" is located in a vast dilapidated mansion that looks as if it were...
hastily cobbled together from mismatched houses gathered from a dozen different towns.
At the very beginning of the Christmas holidays, the hotel usually remains empty, so Milo hopes to relax properly. But the silence of the first frosty night is interrupted by the persistent ringing of a bell. One by one, five guests settle into the inn. The arrival of each of them is shrouded in a certain mystery, which turns out to be intertwined with the history of "The House of Green Glass". Milo is also puzzled by his accidental discovery - a fragment of a navigational map. And meeting Maddy, the cook’s youngest daughter, spurs the young man to start a detective game aimed at uncovering why all these people have arrived and where this strange map leads. He does not yet know what a difficult task awaits him and what he will learn about the mysterious guests, the house, and himself.
