In the late 1970s, the head of the Fan family makes the decision to emigrate from Vietnam – a decision that will destroy their family and upend the lives of those who have left. Some of the children – the... oldest sister Anh and two brothers Minh and Thanh – go first, expecting to reunite with the family in a refugee camp in Hong Kong. This plan is not destined to come true – a sudden tragedy leaves the three children orphaned. Sixteen-year-old Anh suddenly becomes a nanny for her younger brothers. Soon all three immigrate to the UK during the Thatcher era. Will they be able to find happiness in an unfamiliar country and cope with the survivor’s guilt that follows them?
