The protagonist of the novel is a well-known writer, Vadim Nikitin, a former front-line soldier, a platoon commander who participated in the capture of Berlin. He arrives in Germany at the invitation of Frau Gilbert and the literary club. Nikitin is about to engage in discussions and exchanges of views on contemporary culture with writers from European countries. But the main thing awaiting the writer in defeated Germany is a meeting with a distant military past, with the girl he loved back then... "And once upon a time there was Königsdorf, and it was May, and the sun, and we were young, and nothing restrained us, not even war.
