This is a novel of the future, deeply ominous in its vision of dreary horror. Ironically and distantly, the author shows us a totalitarian World State through the eyes of a product of that state, the scientist Leo Calla. Calla... invented the drug Callocain, which denies the mystery of thought and represents the last step towards transforming an individual into a "happy, healthy cell in the state's organism." For, says Lev, "from thoughts and feelings arise words and actions. How can these thoughts and feelings belong to an individual? Does not the entire comrade belong to the state? Whose thoughts and feelings should they belong to? Then, if not to the state?"
