A traditional detective story requires at least three essential ingredients – a victim, a criminal, and a brilliant detective who skillfully unravels any crime. The Swiss crime novel had no classical period – it began in the 20th century with... Friedrich Glauser. The writer turned to detective fiction at a time when characters emerged in the genre who sought not so much the criminal as the truth, and "investigate" life in all its complex contradictions and conflicts. It was in this manner that the author created the character Jacob Studer.
The brilliant commissioner of the capital police, Studer, demonstrated principledness and refused to cover up the case, as a result of which he paid for it with his career and was demoted to a common officer. Now, in the rank of watchmaster, he serves in the Bern police, is regarded as an eccentric and a dreamer, met with a certain degree of distrust, but still is entrusted with the most complex and important cases.
