In a traditional detective story, at least three essential ingredients are needed – a victim, a criminal, and a brilliant detective who brilliantly unravels any crime. The Swiss crime novel did not have its classic period - it began in the 20th century with Friedrich Glauser. The writer came to the detective genre at a time when characters appeared who sought not so much the criminal as the truth, and 'investigate' life in all its complexity of contradictions and conflicts. It is in this way that the author created the image of Jakob Studer.
The brilliant commissioner of the capital's police, Studer, demonstrated principledness and refused to cover up the case, as a result of which he paid with his career and was demoted to the ranks. Now he serves in the Bern police as a sergeant major, is regarded as an eccentric and a dreamer, is met with a certain degree of distrust, but nevertheless is entrusted with the most complex and important cases.
